It’s campaign reporting season!

We just filed our first report with the Department of Elections and some people are going to be disappointed by what they won’t see in it.

This campaign is powered by everyday Delawareans. Always has been, always will be – not developers, corporate PACs, or the fossil fuel industry.

That’s right, I’ve taken $0 from developers, their attorneys, or corporate interests because this campaign is built for the people.

Journalists, elected officials, retirees, district residents, friends and family.

Sorry to those I’ve disappointed who seemed absolutely convinced this campaign was a secret dark-money operation and not one built on a desire to bring experienced leadership to County Council so we can actually achieve our goals.

In fact, I’m so committed to transparency in my reporting that I spent hours listing out nearly every donor to the campaign regardless of their contribution amount, even though the Department of Elections allows candidates to lump any donations of $100 or less into one big pot.

I’ve only done this with a handful of donations that came from journalists who requested anonymity because they would face threats to their personal safety if their names and addresses were published.

We’ve recorded donations from 24 different states and the District of Columbia, but 80% of our funds were raised from people right here in Delaware.

When you spend nearly a decade in the leadership team of a national non-profit, fighting the Trump Administration’s attacks on journalists, and for the First Amendment rights of a free press, those you’ve helped are happy to return the favor.

But these reports don’t just tell you about a candidate based on who has given them money, they tell you a lot about where a candidate has prioritized spending that money too.

That leads me to a few other things you won’t see in my report.

As a result, 94% of our funds spent on printed materials have stayed right here in Delaware with union shops!

Our campaign will always support local businesses first.

You also won’t see my campaign dollars going to any campaign consultants – because spending the better part of two decades covering the stories of our County’s residents, and working for them every single day as a member of the County Government, I don’t need to pay anyone to tell me how to have a conversation with my neighbors in the Third District.

Two decades in journalism has taught me how to listen to the stories of everyday people.

A commitment to knocking thousands of doors myself has put me in the position to hear their concerns.

My experience in County leadership has given me the tools to provide answers and plan real actionable policy.

No consultant is going to replace that.

In three weeks we’ll file our final report before the election. I’m looking forward to disappointing the same people with that one too.
