As the primary race enters the final stretch this summer, organizations are starting to roll out their endorsements for candidates they believe will best serve their constituents.

I’m incredibly honored to have the endorsement of the Delaware Stonewall PAC!

Throughout my career in journalism, I’ve tried to tell the stories of members of the LGBT community with care and compassion.

16 years ago, I was standing in the Sacramento County Clerk’s Office when Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriage in California, was first overturned. Couples had gathered to finally marry their partners after years of waiting and legal battles.

But hopes were dashed as an appeal was filed and the ruling was stayed – those couples would have to wait longer for the same rights and protections as heterosexual couples nationwide.

On this day 13 years ago, three years after the stay was put in place, the Supreme Court finally ruled in favor of same-sex couples when they decided Hollingsworth v. Perry. The stay was lifted two days later, and same-sex couples across California were finally able to marry.

Covering that story cemented in me an uncompromising principle - human rights are non-negotiable.

While the Supreme Court would later rule in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 that same-sex couples nationwide could marry, as we’ve seen with Roe v. Wade, a ruling can be overturned by this Supreme Court no matter how long its stood as the law of the land.

That’s why I’m so disappointed the Delaware House failed to pass protections for Delaware’s same-sex and interracial couples this week when SB100 failed.

With the final days of the legislative session remaining, I’m hopeful our leaders in Dover will stand up for the LGBT community and protect their rights no matter what happens at the federal level.
